When is the best time to visit Osumi Canyon?

It depends what you want to do. Rafting runs mid-March to early June. Swimming and walking the riverbed work from July to September. For the rim viewpoints in comfortable weather with dry tracks and few people, late September and October are the best weeks of the year.

There is no single best month here, because the canyon is two different places depending on the water level. High water in spring means rafting and no swimming. Low water in summer means swimming and no rafting.

Month by month

PeriodWhat the canyon is like
MarchRafting starts mid-month. Cold water, big flow, few visitors. Tracks can still be muddy.
April to MayPeak rafting. The waterfalls are at their strongest and the valley is green. The busiest stretch for tours.
JuneWater drops through the month. Rafting usually ends in the first two weeks. Warm and still green.
July to AugustHot, dry, low water. Tubing, riverbed walking and swimming. Start early, because midday in the gorge is punishing.
September to OctoberThe best all-round weeks. Dry tracks, mild temperatures, autumn colour, and quiet trails. No rafting.
November to FebruaryRain, mud and occasional snow on the higher approaches. Unpaved access is often impassable. No commercial trips run.

If you want to raft

Come between mid-March and the first week of June, and aim for the first half of May if you want the safest bet. The season is driven by snowmelt off the Tomorr massif rather than by dates, so it moves a week or two each year. Booking for late June is a gamble that usually does not pay off.

If you want to swim and walk the riverbed

July through September. The river drops far enough to wade long stretches of the gorge floor, and the pools below Bogove Waterfall become genuinely swimmable. The water stays cold regardless, somewhere around 10°C, so it is a bracing swim rather than a warm one.

If you mainly want the viewpoints

Late September and October. The tracks to the rim have dried out from the spring, the heat has gone, and the tour groups have thinned. Visibility across the gorge is at its best in the clear air after the first autumn rain.

April and May also give excellent views, with more water in the canyon and more people on the road.

Weather and what to pack

Skrapar summers run into the mid-30s°C, and the rim has almost no shade. Spring and autumn sit comfortably in the high teens and low twenties, with cold mornings.

Whatever the month, the river is between 10°C and 15°C and there is no phone signal in the gorge. Bring more water than you think you need, download offline maps before leaving Berat, and carry a layer for the drive back if you have been in the water.
