Osumi Canyon is not a dangerous destination if you match the activity to the season and go with people who know the river. Most incidents here come from underestimating cold water or driving conditions, not from the canyon itself.

The water is colder than it looks

The Osumi runs between 10°C and 15°C year round, including in August. In spring it also carries real Class II to III rapids. Rafting only happens with a certified guide, a wetsuit and a helmet; we do not run trips in water we consider unsafe on the day, whatever the calendar says.

Flash floods

Heavy rain upstream on the Tomorr massif can raise the river fast, even on a clear day in Corovode. If you are hiking the riverbed independently outside a guided trip, check the forecast for the wider region, not just your immediate location, and get out of the gorge if the water starts to rise or turn cloudy.

Rim trails and the waterfall path

The limestone at the canyon rim and the path down to Bogove Waterfall get slick near the spray and after rain. Sturdy footwear with real grip matters more than how fit you are.

No phone signal in the gorge

Cellular coverage drops out inside the canyon walls and in the deeper valleys around Bogove. Download offline maps before you leave Berat and tell someone your planned route and return time.

Driving to the canyon

The paved road from Berat to Corovode is fine in any car. Past Corovode, the tracks to the rim viewpoints and the Bogove trailhead are unpaved and rutted; standard rental insurance in Albania typically excludes damage there. Take a high-clearance 4x4 if you are driving yourself, or book a guided trip with pickup.
